In poker games, a freeroll is used in different occurrences. One is the free roll hand where a player can only split the pot to win and the other occurrence is the free roll tournament involves a tournament without the entry fee.

Freeroll Hand

In free roll hand, a player is assured of winning the whole pot if certain final cards are dealt after splitting the pot with the opponent. This occurs only when two players are left before the last card is dealt. Freeroll hand is common in a high-low game where one player has a guaranteed low handmade and has a possibility of catching lucky cards that will give him a straight or flush on the river, as well as a winning high whereas his opponent cannot make a better low no matter what the last card is. Similarly, in freeroll hand, a player usually has a hand that places them in a position to either split the pot with their opponent or win the pot outright. For instance, if there are cards on the table let’s say 3456, and the two players each have a 5 and 6, it means their two pairs will tie and split the pot but in case of two spades in the community cards and of the player has two spades in their hole cards, then the player has a higher chance of making a flush on the river and beating his opponent. This is referred to as freeroll since there is no cost involved for both in completing the hand.

Freeroll Tournament

A freeroll tournament is a tournament that is free to enter. In as much as this may sound good, the bad part is that there are no much profits. Generally in a play-to-play tournament, the prize pool involves the accumulation of the entry fee minus a commission that is kept by the house. However, in a freeroll tournament, the prize pool is regarded as a donation provided by the house. A house can raise it by charging for food and beverages, ticket fees for spectators, broadcast rights fees, sponsorship fees, or a combination of these. Although there are no entry requirements, it doesn’t mean there are no other prerequisites. In most cases, a tournament can require an invitation or certain conditions to be met and still be referred to as a freeroll tournament.

In conclusion, what is a free roll in poker? The term freeroll can be used in playing money games in online poker although such games are not technically free rolls because they have buy-ins. However, free rolls will help you move up in the game without spending a single penny. Players get an opportunity to gain experience.
